Markups

Upload and review screenshots, PDFs, videos, and live websites in the markup viewer.

A markup is the core review unit in Sitemarks. Each markup represents a single asset — a screenshot, PDF document, video, or live website — that your team annotates and discusses. Markups live inside projects and can be organized into folders for larger engagements.

Supported markup types

Sitemarks accepts four asset types, each with a purpose-built viewer:

  • Screenshot — Upload a PNG, JPEG, or WebP image. The viewer lets you pan and zoom freely to see every detail.
  • PDF — Upload a multi-page PDF. Navigate between pages and place annotations on any page.
  • Video — Upload an MP4 or WebM file. Annotations can be pinned to a specific moment so reviewers jump straight to the relevant frame.
  • Website — Paste a URL and Sitemarks captures a full-page screenshot automatically. You can also import an entire site (multi-page crawl) to review every page in one project.

Viewer toolbar

When you open a markup, the viewer toolbar appears along the top of the canvas. It provides quick access to the most common actions:

  • Zoom controls — Zoom in, zoom out, or reset to fit the viewport. You can also pinch-to-zoom on trackpads and touch devices, or use Ctrl/Cmd + scroll wheel.
  • Pan — Click and drag the canvas to pan when zoomed in, or hold the spacebar while dragging.
  • Annotation tools — Switch between pin mode (single-point annotation) and box mode (rectangular region). See Annotations and Comments for details.
  • Version selector — Choose which version of the markup you are viewing. Each time a website markup is re-captured or a new file is uploaded, a new version is created automatically.

Versions and comparison

Every markup supports multiple versions. Every time a new screenshot is captured or a file is re-uploaded, it is saved as a new version so you always have the full revision history.

From the version selector dropdown you can:

  • Switch between any two versions to compare them side by side.
  • See which annotations belong to which version, keeping your review focused on the current revision.
  • Review the capture timestamp and viewport dimensions for each version.

Re-capture websites on demand

For website markups, click the refresh icon in the toolbar to trigger a new capture. Sitemarks takes a fresh full-page screenshot at the same viewport dimensions and saves it as the next version.

Markup status

Each markup carries a status that reflects where it sits in your review pipeline:

| Status | Meaning | |--------|---------| | Active | The default state. The markup is available for review. | | Archived | Removed from the active list but still accessible via search or direct link. |

Status is independent of annotation-level workflow. A markup can be active even if every annotation on it has been resolved. Use markup status to signal whether the asset itself still needs attention, and annotation status to track individual pieces of feedback.

Organizing markups

Markups belong to a project and can optionally be placed inside folders. Within a project view you can:

  • Drag and drop markups between folders.
  • Bulk select markups to move, delete, or change status in one action.
  • Filter by markup type (screenshot, PDF, video, website) to focus on a specific asset category.

Deleted markups are moved to the Trash and held for 30 days before permanent removal.

Share links

Any markup can be shared externally via a share link. Share links support optional password protection and permission scoping (view-only or comment-enabled), so stakeholders outside your organization can leave feedback without needing a Sitemarks account.
